Remote Patient Monitoring: challenges and opportunities

All technologies introduce controversies and disruptive technologies can kick up a storm. My colleagues and I have experienced these reactions across industries, academia, and government. I have also identified, traced, and analyzed similar responses to technological progress dating to the early 1800s. In this context, remote patient monitoring (RPM) systems are the latest disruptive technological innovations to challenge established practices, professions, businesses, and markets. The key difference is that RPM is at the center of human #health and #healthcare in contrast to industries producing consumer goods and industrial products.
Kaiser Permanented and several nurses’ unions are quarreling over the effectiveness, safety, and labor implications of RPM and advanced at-home patient care. We believe that both parties care deeply about #patients, the role of #nurses, and the future of their industry. What’s missing from their debate is how their customers (patients) will respond as they balance the risks and benefits of lower costs and their desire to return home.
We’ve researched and developed solutions based on #BioBeat’s RPM technologies to help providers and their teams innovate the business models at the heart of healthcare services. This is where the needs and interests of stakeholders, including patients, medical staff, and management intersect. In this context, our teams work with stakeholders to bridge differences and find common ground in deploying sustainable RPM solutions that meet patient needs and improve care.
Healthcare providers and their medical staff displayed remarkable dedication and commitment to patients and their families during the Covid pandemic. They can build on their shared values and experiences to innovate their care models and deploy RPM solutions that serve all stakeholders. The emerging views and attitudes of patients are also important because growing empowerment and expanding choices carry implications for providers, doctors, and nurses. We cover these issues in detail in our presentations and training on innovating healthcare services through remote patient monitoring solutions.
